Google Search Scam Targets Major Brands

Scammers are using Google’s sponsored search results to trick people into giving up personal information. This widespread scam targets users searching for tech support from major companies like Apple, Bank of America, Netflix, and others.

How the Scam Works

The scam uses fake ads on Google that appear as legitimate tech support results. Clicking these ads takes users to websites that look exactly like the real thing. However, instead of the real company’s phone number, these sites display a fake number connected to the scammers. The address bar might even show the correct website address, making it harder to spot the scam.

Once a victim calls the fake number, the scammers pretend to be from the company and try to get access to personal data, credit card information, or even remote access to the victim’s computer. For financial institutions like Bank of America and PayPal, the goal is to empty the victim’s account.

Warning Signs to Watch Out For

To avoid becoming a victim, be wary of these red flags:

  • Phone numbers in the URL: This is a major warning sign.
  • Encoded characters: Look for things like
%20 (space) and %2B (+ sign) in the URL.
  • Urgent language:
Phrases like “Call Now,” “Account suspended,” or “Emergency support” are often used to create a sense of panic. Be especially cautious if you see this kind of language in your browser’s address bar.

By being aware of these warning signs, you can protect yourself from these increasingly sophisticated scams.
