Spain’s First Bitcoin Master’s Degree: A Deep Dive

Spain’s University of the Hespérides is launching the world’s first Spanish-language Master’s degree program dedicated entirely to Bitcoin. Starting April 28th, this online program is designed for professionals who want a comprehensive understanding of Bitcoin, going way beyond just trading.

What You’ll Learn

The curriculum covers four main areas:

  • Technical: How Bitcoin actually works under the hood.
  • Legal: The laws and regulations surrounding Bitcoin globally.
  • Economic: Bitcoin’s impact on the global economy and its various economic models.
  • Philosophical: The broader implications and ideas behind Bitcoin.

The program will explore Bitcoin’s history, technology, economic impact, and legal challenges. It also includes business strategies related to Bitcoin. Program director Álvaro D. María aims to bridge the knowledge gap and equip students to use Bitcoin responsibly.

Beyond Buying and Selling

This isn’t your typical “get rich quick” crypto course. It treats Bitcoin as a monetary system, comparing it to traditional money and exploring its massive global appeal. You’ll learn about Bitcoin’s unique features like its limited supply, decentralized nature, and how its protocol works. The program also delves into the varying regulations across different countries and their potential impact on Bitcoin’s future.

A Growing Trend

The University of the Hespérides isn’t alone in recognizing Bitcoin’s importance in education. Other institutions are also incorporating Bitcoin and related topics into their programs:

  • The University of Cincinnati (US) started including Bitcoin and Web3 in its curriculum in 2022.
  • Mi Primer Bitcoin (El Salvador) partnered with the Ministry of Education in 2023 to offer Bitcoin courses.
  • Even schools like Lomond School (UK) are getting involved, accepting Bitcoin for tuition and planning to teach about Bitcoin and blockchain starting in Fall 2025.
