Senators Investigate CFTC Chair’s Ties to Sam Bankman-Fried

Background

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Charles Grassley have sent a letter to Commodities and Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair Rostin Behnam, requesting information about his relationship with Sam Bankman-Fried, the former CEO of FTX.

Alleged Ties

Bankman-Fried is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for stealing $8 billion from FTX users. The senators believe that understanding Behnam’s interactions with Bankman-Fried could shed light on how the FTX collapse occurred.

Request for Information

The letter asks for a detailed account of all meetings, phone calls, and written correspondence between Behnam and Bankman-Fried, including dates, minutes, and copies of documents. The senators also request a list of all conversations involving Behnam or CFTC employees about Bankman-Fried, FTX, Alameda Research, or related executives.

Deadline

The senators have requested the information by April 29, 2024. They believe this information will help them and the public understand the nature of Behnam’s relationship with Bankman-Fried in the lead-up to the FTX collapse.
