Beware of fake QR codes appearing on New York City parking meters! These codes are part of a scam designed to steal your payment information.
How the Scam Works
Scammers are placing fake QR codes on parking meters. If you scan these codes, you’ll be directed to a malicious website that asks for your credit card details. Your payment information is then stolen.
Stay Safe: What to Do
The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) warns residents to be vigilant. Do not scan any QR codes found on parking meters. Legitimate payment methods are through the ParkNYC app or directly at the meter itself.
Reporting Fake Codes
If you spot a fake QR code, the DOT encourages you to remove it and report it to ParkNYC. The city is actively working to remove these fraudulent codes and bring those responsible to justice. City-wide inspections are underway.
Commissioner’s Warning
DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez issued a warning: “Consumers beware: scammers are targeting parking meters, and we want you to be vigilant. If you see a QR code on a parking meter, do not scan it, and please report it.”
Remember:
Always be cautious when using QR codes, especially in public places./p>
