Minnesota Considers Guaranteed Income Program for Residents

A bill is making its way through the Minnesota legislature that would provide $200 million in guaranteed income to eligible residents.

Program Details

If passed, the program would allocate $100 million this year and another $100 million in 2025. Households living at or below 300% of the federal poverty level would be eligible to apply.

Depending on demand, each household could receive between $350 and $1,200 every month for 12 to 24 months.

Benefits

Representative Athena Hollins, who co-authored the bill, believes it will have a significant impact on participants and communities statewide.

Studies have shown that guaranteed income programs can lead to:

  • Improved job outcomes
  • Better mental health
  • Increased educational performance in children
  • Enhanced economic development

Funding

The program would be funded through the state’s general fund.
