Los Angeles is launching a massive guaranteed income pilot program for community college students. This groundbreaking initiative will provide much-needed financial support to help students succeed.
$3 Million for Students
The program, called BOOST (Building Outstanding Opportunities for Students to Thrive), will give $3 million in unrestricted monthly payments to 250 students. Each selected student will receive $1,000 a month for a year.
Who’s Eligible?
The program is specifically designed for students at four Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) colleges: East LA College, LA City College, LA Trade-Technical College, and LA Southwest College. Students pursuing careers in healthcare are the target recipients.
Addressing Financial Hardship
The goal is to help students overcome the financial challenges many face while studying. The program aims to close the gap between financial aid, wages, and the actual cost of living for students.
Funding the Program
The BOOST program is funded entirely through donations. Major contributions came from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation ($3,175,000) and the Young Adults Forward Fund ($867,500).
A Timely Boost
The first payments are going out just before Thanksgiving, providing crucial support to students during the holiday season. Organizers hope this financial assistance will allow students to focus on their studies without worrying about basic needs.
