Capital One Sued Over Shopping Extension

Capital One is facing a class-action lawsuit claiming its popular shopping browser extension is stealing money from online creators.

The Allegations

The lawsuit centers around Capital One Shopping, a free browser extension that helps users find deals and coupons online. Plaintiffs, including bloggers and influencers, allege that the extension interferes with their affiliate marketing programs. They claim Capital One’s software overrides their tracking codes, diverting commissions intended for them to Capital One instead. The plaintiffs accuse the bank of unjust enrichment, contract interference, and violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act.

Judge’s Ruling

A judge partially rejected Capital One’s attempt to dismiss the lawsuit. The judge found that the plaintiffs presented a believable case that Capital One knew its actions were diverting payments.

Capital One’s Response

Capital One denies the accusations, stating that its extension doesn’t steal commissions and that it intends to fight the lawsuit.

Another Recent Lawsuit

This isn’t Capital One’s first legal battle recently. The bank recently settled a separate lawsuit for $475 million related to allegedly misleading customers about savings account interest rates.
