Big Data Breach Settlement: $20 Million to be Shared

Millions of people affected by a massive data breach are in line for a payout. A court has given preliminary approval to a $20 million settlement.

Who’s Getting Paid?

Over five million users of Fortra’s file transfer platform will share the money. The breach exposed sensitive information including names, addresses, birthdates, Social Security numbers, and health insurance details. The lawsuit also named several other companies, including Brightline, Aetna, and others, as defendants.

How Much Will I Get?

The amount each person receives depends on whether they can prove financial losses due to the breach. Those with documentation of losses could get up to $5,000. Those without documentation will receive approximately $85.

What’s the Deadline?

Claims must be submitted by August 29th.

Extra Benefits

In addition to the cash payment, those affected will also get a year of dark web monitoring to help protect against identity theft.

What’s Next?

The court will hold a final approval hearing in mid-September. Once the settlement is finalized, payments will be distributed.
