A massive data breach at Sysco, a major food distributor, will result in a $2.3 million payout to over 71,000 affected individuals. A court has preliminarily approved the settlement.
Who Gets Paid?
The settlement covers US residents who received notification from Sysco about the May 2023 cybersecurity incident.
What Happened?
The breach exposed sensitive personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, bank account details, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. This data, used for payroll purposes, is now potentially available on the dark web.
The Lawsuit
A lawsuit, filed by Sysco truck driver Joseph Trottier, claimed Sysco failed to adequately protect customer data, leading to the breach. The suit alleged that the company neglected to implement sufficient security measures, including data encryption, leaving victims vulnerable to identity theft.
The Settlement Details
Victims can claim up to $5,000 for documented losses related to identity theft or its prevention. They’ll also receive an additional payment, estimated between $100 and $200, with a maximum of $599.
Sysco’s Response
Sysco acknowledged in March 2023 that unauthorized access to its systems had occurred and that data had been potentially compromised.
