Worldcoin’s US Launch: Eye Scans and Crypto

Sam Altman’s controversial Worldcoin (WLD) cryptocurrency project is now live in the US. The project, which uses eye scans to create unique digital IDs, has launched in six major cities: Atlanta, Nashville, Miami, Los Angeles, Austin, and San Francisco.

How it Works

Users can visit designated locations and use Worldcoin’s Orb devices to scan their eyes. This creates a unique digital ID, called a World ID, and grants users WLD tokens. World IDs can then be used to verify identity on various platforms, including popular services like Minecraft, Reddit, and Telegram.

Regulatory Hurdles and Partnerships

Worldcoin’s expansion into the US comes after facing regulatory scrutiny in other countries like Spain and Portugal, where operations were temporarily suspended due to concerns about data privacy and security. Despite these challenges, Worldcoin has forged partnerships, including one with Visa for a WLD debit card and another with Match Group to explore identity verification on dating apps. Coinbase has also added WLD to its plans.

Market Reaction

Following the US launch announcement, the price of WLD briefly spiked but then fell, currently trading around $1. While this is a significant drop from its peak earlier this year, it’s still up about 20% over the past week.
