Wells Fargo’s Account Freeze Leaves Elderly Man Stranded

Account Locked Without Explanation

A 92-year-old man named Frank Pfluger faced an eight-month ordeal after Wells Fargo abruptly froze his bank account following the loss of his wife. Frank attempted to withdraw funds from the joint account but was met with an “Insufficient Funds” message.

Legal Confusion

Frank questioned the bank’s actions, as joint accounts typically grant rights of survivorship. Wells Fargo initially failed to provide a clear explanation for the freeze.

Multiple Authorization Attempts

Frank submitted four letters of authorization to the bank between November 2023 and January 2024, but his requests were not processed.

Media Intervention

After months of frustration, Frank reached out to NBC10 Philadelphia, which contacted Wells Fargo for comment.

Bank’s Response

Within days, Wells Fargo issued a statement acknowledging the resolution of the issue. The bank referred to its website for information on joint accounts and rights of survivorship.

Funds Released

Following the media intervention, Frank received a check from Wells Fargo for $1,993.91.
