A British digital asset firm, Copper Technologies, allegedly transferred over $4.2 million in cryptocurrency to a wallet belonging to Jonatan Zimenkov, a Russian national later sanctioned by the US for his alleged role in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Sanctions on Zimenkov
In February 2023, the US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Zimenkov and his father, Igor, for their involvement in Russian cybersecurity and helicopter sales abroad. The sanctions also revealed an Ethereum wallet belonging to Jonatan Zimenkov.
Copper’s Transactions
Copper reportedly sent Zimenkov’s wallet about 1,700 Ethereum (ETH) in two transactions in May 2021. The value of the transferred ETH has since increased to $6.89 million.
Copper’s Response
A Copper spokesperson stated that the firm takes compliance and regulatory obligations seriously and has acted in accordance with all applicable sanctions prohibitions.
