The official TRON X account was hacked on May 2nd, 2025. TRON has confirmed it was a social engineering attack.
Hack Details
Hackers used the account to promote a fake contract address and sent out a bunch of suspicious direct messages. They also followed a bunch of random accounts before TRON regained control. TRON warned everyone to ignore any direct messages from their X account on May 2nd and to delete any they might have received.
How it Happened
The attack started with a TRON team member falling victim to a social engineering scam. Once the hackers had access to this employee’s account, they were able to take over the main TRON X account. Even after TRON got their account back, the hackers continued to use the compromised employee account to contact people.
The Aftermath
TRON is investigating and has identified several X and Telegram accounts linked to the hackers. They’ve also contacted law enforcement.
A Public Dispute
TRON founder Justin Sun asked OKX, a cryptocurrency exchange, to freeze a wallet believed to be involved in the hack. He claimed law enforcement had already contacted OKX. However, OKX CEO Star Xu publicly denied receiving any official request, challenging Sun to provide proof. Sun subsequently deleted his original tweet.

Moving Forward: The Kant Upgrade
Despite the hack, TRON launched a major upgrade to its Kant mainnet. This update improves the contract system, APIs, and node performance, making the blockchain more secure and efficient, particularly when interacting with Ethereum. While users won’t see many direct changes, TRON says these improvements are crucial for long-term scalability and robustness.
