The Open Network (TON) is making a layer-2 payment network its top priority for 2025. They believe this is key to TON’s overall success.
Why a Layer-2?
TON’s main blockchain (layer-1) is designed for scalability and decentralization, not necessarily lightning-fast transactions. While it’s currently good enough for everyday use, high-speed activities like high-frequency trading and instant gaming need a faster solution. That’s where the layer-2 payment network comes in.
The Payment Network: What it Offers
The planned layer-2 network, based on payment channels, will offer:
- Near-instant transfers with tiny fees.
- Easy asset swaps.
Development Stages
The network is currently in beta testing and hasn’t been fully audited yet. The development plan has three phases:
- Finishing the beta testing and ironing out any issues.
- Adding support for jettons (a type of token) and other currencies.
- Adding support for more advanced swaps.
