A mysterious Bitcoin wallet, inactive for over a decade, recently made a huge move, transferring over $257 million worth of Bitcoin.
Eleven Years of Silence, Then BOOM!
This dormant wallet, first noticed by crypto tracker Lookonchain, suddenly shifted 2,700 Bitcoin to a new wallet on Tuesday. The Bitcoin had been sitting there since December 2013, when Bitcoin was worth a mere $625.84. That means the value of this stash increased by a mind-boggling 15,137.4% in just 11 years!
Dusting Attacks: A Red Herring?
While the wallet received tiny amounts of Bitcoin a few times over the years, these small transactions likely weren’t from the original owner. Experts believe these were “dusting attacks,” a sneaky tactic used by scammers to track wallet owners. These attacks involve sending tiny amounts of crypto to various wallets to try and identify their owners.
Bitcoin’s Current Status
At the time of writing, Bitcoin is trading around $98,687, up over 3% in the last 24 hours. It’s just shy of its all-time high of $99,645, reached on November 22nd.
