Nigeria is making big moves in the tech world! The government has launched a new program to train 1,000 young Nigerians each year in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain technology. This initiative is part of Nigeria’s larger plan to become a leader in digital innovation.
A Digital Future for Nigeria
The program, called the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing Initiative, was launched by Vice President Kashim Shettima. He emphasized Nigeria’s ambition to not just catch up with other countries in tech, but to surpass them.
The governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar Namadi, called the program a fantastic opportunity for young people. He encouraged them to jump into the world of digital technology and reap the benefits, like new jobs and a stronger economy.
Building a Tech Ecosystem
The program aims to equip young Nigerians with the skills they need to succeed in the global tech workforce. This will help Nigeria become a hub for digital transformation in Africa.
To support this goal, the government is partnering with tech startup Gluwa to provide training in AI, blockchain, and other cutting-edge technologies. This partnership shows Nigeria’s commitment to nurturing local talent and building a strong fintech environment.
Research and Financial Support
Beyond training, Nigeria is also investing in research and development. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is setting up research facilities across the country. These facilities will focus on important areas like AI, blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), drones, and robotics.
The government is also offering financial incentives to small businesses. Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will receive a grant of 150,000 Nigerian nairas (about $90) to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship in the tech sector.
This ambitious program is a clear sign that Nigeria is serious about becoming a major player in the global tech landscape. By investing in its youth and supporting innovation, Nigeria is paving the way for a brighter digital future.
