Mobile banking malware attacks are surging, hitting Android and iPhone users hard. A new report reveals a massive increase in these attacks.
A Massive Increase in Attacks
The number of smartphone users targeted by banking malware exploded in 2024, jumping a whopping 258% compared to 2023. That’s a jump from 69,200 victims to a staggering 247,949.
Mamont Malware Leads the Charge
The most prolific malware was Mamont, responsible for about 37% of all attacks. This malware, which first appeared late in 2023, is heavily distributed in Russia and surrounding countries. Attack methods range from simple “Is that you in the picture?” scams to more sophisticated social engineering tactics using fake online stores and delivery tracking apps.
Global Impact
Europe and Asia were the hardest-hit regions. Looking at PC attacks, Central Asia saw some of the highest infection rates. Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan saw particularly sharp increases in banking trojan infections.
The Future of Mobile Banking Threats
Experts predict that these attacks will only become more sophisticated. Cybercriminals will likely personalize attacks, exploiting our everyday digital habits. This means we all need to be extra vigilant and take steps to protect ourselves.
