From Billionaires to Bunkmates: Diddy and Sam Bankman-Fried Share a Cell

Two big names from different worlds are now sharing a room in a notorious Brooklyn jail.

Diddy and SBF: An Unexpected Pairing

Rapper and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs and former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, once household names in their respective fields, are now both inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn.

Diddy was arrested last week on charges of sex trafficking and racketeering. He’s pleaded not guilty but is being held without bail.

SBF, the former multi-billionaire founder of the collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, has been at MDC since August 2023. He’s facing trial for his role in FTX’s downfall.

Harsh Conditions at MDC

The MDC has been criticized for its harsh conditions. Human rights groups have described the facility as “limiting” and “unpleasant.”

The jail has faced scrutiny for things like:

  • A power outage in 2019 that left inmates in freezing conditions.
  • Reports of excessive force, delayed medical care, and poor sanitation.

Sharing a Dorm

Both Diddy and SBF are housed in a section of MDC designed for high-profile inmates. This area is like a self-contained dorm, about the size of a basketball court, with bunk beds for around 20 inmates.

While it’s still considered general population, it offers more security than other areas of the jail. Inmates in this dorm don’t have access to communal spaces like the cafeteria.

SBF’s Situation

A fellow inmate reported that SBF has been struggling in jail. He’s reportedly lost weight and isn’t maintaining good hygiene.

It’s unclear how long SBF will remain in this unit. His spokesperson hasn’t commented on his current situation.

This unexpected pairing highlights the harsh realities of the criminal justice system, even for those who once occupied the highest echelons of society.
