Kidnapping and Extortion
A 24-year-old Florida man, Remy St. Felix, has been convicted for leading a violent crime ring that targeted cryptocurrency owners. From September 2022 to July 2023, St. Felix and his crew invaded homes, kidnapped victims, and forced them to hand over their crypto wallets.
Sophisticated Scheme
Beforehand, the crew hacked into victims’ email accounts and conducted surveillance. After the kidnappings, they laundered the stolen funds through privacy-enhanced digital assets and anonymous platforms.
Justice Served
Nicole M. Argentieri, a Justice Department official, stated that St. Felix and his accomplices “targeted victims for brutal home invasions, kidnappings, and robberies.” Despite their attempts to hide their activities, they were apprehended by investigators and prosecutors.
Specific Incident
In April 2023, St. Felix and an accomplice broke into a home, tied up the occupants, and threatened them with a gun. They stole $150,000 worth of crypto assets.
Arrest and Sentencing
St. Felix was arrested in July 2023 while planning another home invasion. He was convicted on nine counts and faces a minimum of seven years in prison, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
