Do Kwon’s Extradition to South Korea on Hold Again

Terra co-founder Do Kwon’s extradition to South Korea has been put on hold once again. The Montenegrin Supreme Court has decided to postpone the extradition, citing a request for “protection of legality” from Kwon’s legal team.

This is the second time this year that the Montenegrin Supreme Court has delayed Kwon’s extradition. Back in March, they initially halted the process, claiming that the lower courts didn’t follow proper procedures when approving the extradition.

Kwon’s legal journey has been a rollercoaster. In March, his extradition to the US was also revoked due to procedural issues. However, in June, the High Court of Podgorica ruled that Kwon should be sent to South Korea, as their extradition request came in before the US request.

Last week, a Montenegrin appellate court upheld the lower courts’ decision to extradite Kwon to South Korea. However, the Supreme Court’s latest decision throws a wrench into the plans.

Kwon was arrested in Montenegro in March 2023. He was attempting to fly to the UAE with a fake Costa Rican passport. He faces criminal charges in both the US and South Korea related to the collapse of Terra and its stablecoin, which resulted in billions of dollars in losses.

The Montenegrin Supreme Court will now decide on the “protection of legality” request within the legal timeframe. This latest development keeps Kwon’s extradition fate uncertain.
