CZ Calls Out the Wall Street Journal
Changpeng Zhao (“CZ”), Binance’s co-founder, has slammed a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) article claiming he agreed to testify against Justin Sun, founder of TRON, as part of a plea deal with the US Department of Justice (DOJ). CZ called the article a “baseless hit piece,” suggesting it was a paid smear campaign. He pointed out on X (formerly Twitter) that the WSJ was “really trying here.”
Clarifying the Charges
CZ clarified that the charges against him were not for money laundering or fraud, but for anti-money laundering (AML) violations. He emphasized the crucial difference: failing to prevent money laundering is distinct from actually committing it. He served four months in prison after pleading guilty to these AML violations in April 2024 and was released in September 2024.
Justin Sun’s Response
Justin Sun also responded to the WSJ report on X, downplaying the allegations. He stated that he’s unaware of the rumors and emphasized his close relationship with CZ, calling him both a mentor and a friend. Sun also mentioned his open communication with both CZ and the DOJ, highlighting TRON’s collaboration with the DOJ through the T3 Financial Crime Unit.
