Chinese Hackers Breach US Treasury Department

Chinese government-backed hackers have reportedly infiltrated the US Treasury Department’s computer systems. This significant breach affected hundreds of computers.

The Scale of the Breach

According to reports, approximately 400 laptops and desktops were compromised, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen’s computer. While the breach accessed employee usernames and passwords, along with around 3,000 unclassified files, the Treasury Department’s email and classified systems remained untouched. On Secretary Yellen’s computer, fewer than 50 files were accessed.

What Data Was Stolen?

The hackers appeared focused on information related to sanctions and international affairs. They also accessed data from the Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS), which reviews foreign investments for national security risks.

The Treasury Department learned of the breach through a warning from BeyondTrust Corp., a cybersecurity firm, on December 8th. Chinese officials have denied any involvement.
