Suspicious Phone Call Leads to Fraud
An Ohio family lost $22,000 from their JPMorgan Chase account after receiving a suspicious phone call. Michelle Kalista reported that the caller, who claimed to be from Chase, knew her personal information and transaction history.
Bank Confirms Fraud, but Funds Not Frozen
Michelle’s husband, Mike, contacted Chase to confirm the fraud. The bank acknowledged the attempts but failed to freeze the funds. On the third attempt, $22,000 disappeared.
Chase Blames Customers
After an investigation, Chase determined that the Kalistas authorized or benefited from the transactions and refused to reimburse them. The bank stated that Michelle compromised her account.
Similar Scams on the Rise
Other victims across the US have reported similar scams. A Memphis woman lost $81,000 from her Wells Fargo account, and a Houston resident lost $4,500 from Chase. Wells Fargo customers have also accused the bank of denying reimbursement after $83,000 went missing.
