Franklin County, Ohio is launching a pilot program to help families struggling with homelessness and economic instability. The initiative involves two parts: a one-time payment and recurring monthly payments.
One-Time Cash Boost
The Community Shelter Board will provide 80 families with a single payment of $1,500. This aims to give immediate relief to those facing financial hardship.
Monthly Payments for Stability
Separately, the RISE Together Innovation Institute will give 20 families $500 per month for 11 months. This longer-term support is designed to provide more sustained economic stability.
Why This Program?
Homelessness in Franklin County is rising rapidly—six times faster than the population growth. As of January 23rd, there were 2,556 homeless individuals, a 7.4% increase from the previous year. The program’s organizers believe that guaranteed income can offer a lifeline, allowing families to focus on stability and planning for the future.
Research and Collaboration
Ohio State University will be involved in evaluating the program’s effectiveness. Researchers will track the impact on both the participating families and the wider community. The hope is to gather data that will inform future policies aimed at reducing homelessness and promoting economic well-being.
Program Goals
The program’s leaders emphasize that this initiative is about more than just money; it’s about restoring dignity and hope. The goal is to provide families with the breathing room they need to get back on their feet and plan for a brighter future.
