A Nigerian court has pushed back the hearing for a tax evasion case against Binance and its executives to May 17.
Background
The Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) filed charges against Binance and two of its executives in March for failing to pay taxes and helping customers avoid taxes. Binance had not registered with the government before offering services in Nigeria.
Recent Hearing
Only one of the executives, Tigran Gambaryan, appeared in court on April 19. He refused to plead because Binance had not been served with the charges. The prosecution argued that Gambaryan should represent both himself and Binance, but his lawyer objected.
Adjournment
The judge adjourned the case to May 17 to make a final decision. This is the second time the trial has been postponed due to issues with serving Binance with the charges.
Binance’s Troubles in Nigeria
Binance is facing other regulatory issues in Nigeria. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has accused the exchange of money laundering. The government has also accused Binance of contributing to the devaluation of the Nigerian currency.
Binance has disabled naira services on its platform and is working to resolve the legal issues.
