Binance Executive’s Fate in Nigeria: US Lawmakers Demand Release

US Lawmakers’ Appeal

US lawmakers are urging the release of Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan, who has been detained in Nigeria since February.

Prison Visit and Health Concerns

Two US representatives recently visited Gambaryan in prison and reported alarming details about his health. He is reportedly suffering from malaria, double pneumonia, and weight loss. Despite a court order, he has been denied proper medical care.

Charges and Allegations

Gambaryan was arrested with colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla on tax evasion and money laundering charges. Binance CEO Richard Teng has dismissed the charges as baseless and accused Nigerian authorities of targeting a mid-level employee.

Congressional Letter

Sixteen US Congress members wrote to President Biden, expressing concern over the charges and Gambaryan’s health. They urged the administration to intervene before it’s too late.

Binance’s Response

Binance has appointed a local representative to handle the legal dispute and some charges have been dropped. However, Gambaryan and Anjarwalla still face money laundering charges and remain in custody.

Lawmakers’ Request

Representatives Hill and Houlahan have called for Gambaryan’s humanitarian release, emphasizing the need for his safe return to the US. They believe he is being wrongfully detained and his health is at risk.
