A former bank employee in New Jersey has admitted to stealing $105,000 from a deceased customer’s account.
Uncovering the Scheme
Jorge Nova, a former employee at a bank in Nutley, noticed that a deceased customer’s account continued to receive Social Security benefits. The retiree had passed away in 2014, but the Social Security Administration (SSA) had not been notified.
Exploiting the Situation
Nova used his position at the bank to create a debit card in the customer’s name and transfer funds from the account. He then created new accounts with a money service provider to launder the stolen money.
Extent of the Theft
The scheme lasted for over four years, with Nova illegally obtaining $105,000.
Consequences
Nova pleaded guilty to wire fraud and faces a potential 30-year prison sentence. He is scheduled to be sentenced in October.
