Bank Teller’s Million-Dollar Heist

A New York bank teller is facing serious charges after allegedly stealing a cool million bucks.

The Great Bank Robbery

Daniel A. Acebo, a business banker at an unnamed New York bank, was responsible for counting the daily cash in the vault. According to investigators, he allegedly cooked the books, forging his supervisor’s signature to cover up his massive theft. He even tried to get special permission to skip his mandatory two-week vacation – a bank regulation designed to prevent exactly this kind of thing! His request was denied.

The Discovery

The scheme unraveled when another teller discovered a significant cash shortage during a routine count in December 2023. While Acebo reported over a million dollars in the vault, only about $100,000 was actually there.

Caught on Camera

Surveillance footage allegedly shows Acebo practicing his boss’s signature at work and discreetly stuffing cash into a backpack and even his sock! Between June and December, he reportedly deposited around $600,000 in various ATMs across the state.

Facing the Music

Acebo has been charged with embezzlement and misapplication of bank funds in a White Plains, New York federal court. He’s facing some serious time if convicted.
