AT&T is shelling out big bucks to settle a lawsuit stemming from two major data breaches. A judge has approved a $177 million settlement for affected customers.
The Breaches
The first breach, back in 2019, saw hackers making off with personal info from a whopping 73 million people – both current and former AT&T customers. Stolen data included Social Security numbers, names, and birthdates. While AT&T suspects a vendor was responsible, they admit the information was exposed.
Then, last year, hackers hit AT&T’s cloud system, stealing call and text metadata from nearly 110 million customers between May and October 2022.
The Settlement
Customers who can show they suffered financial losses due to the breaches will get a bigger piece of the $177 million pie. Eligible customers should be hearing from AT&T via mail or email soon, with the claims process kicking off in August.
