Lloyds Bank is sounding the alarm about a surge in fake online stores that are scamming thousands of customers out of millions of dollars.
Fake Websites, Real Losses
Over the past year, scammers have been creating fake websites that mimic popular brands like House of Fraser, Office, and Superdrug. These fake sites advertise huge discounts to lure shoppers in, but the products they sell never arrive, are cheap knock-offs, or are completely wrong.
One customer, for example, thought they were ordering Dior perfume but ended up with a child’s ring instead.
The Rise of Online Scams
These scams have caused a massive increase in credit card disputes, with a 211% jump reported by Lloyds.
How to Protect Yourself
Lloyds Bank and consumer experts are urging shoppers to be extra cautious when buying online:
- Double-check the website address: Be wary of sites ending in “.net” or “.org,” as these are rarely used for legitimate online shopping.
- Be suspicious of “too good to be true” deals: If prices seem ridiculously low or you’re pressured by a countdown timer, it’s likely a scam.
- Do your research: Look for reviews and feedback from other customers before making a purchase.
Stay Safe Online
Online shopping can be convenient, but it’s important to stay vigilant. By following these tips, you can help protect yourself from becoming a victim of online scams.
