Evanston’s Guaranteed Income Program to Distribute $840,000

A new pilot program in Evanston, Illinois, will provide $500 monthly checks to 140 families living below the poverty line for a year.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify, families must:

  • Have children 5 years old or younger
  • Have incomes at or below 1.84 times the federal poverty line ($31,200)

Program Focus

The program targets families in the 8902 tract, which has faced rising inequality and affordability challenges.

Investment in the Future

“Investing in our youngest children is investing in the future of Evanston,” said Kristin Meyer, a management analyst for the city’s Health and Human Services Department.

Skepticism and Response

Some residents questioned why the program was limited to the 8902 tract. Meyer explained that the area has a history of redlining and discrimination that has created unique disadvantages.
