Google to Pay $8.75 Million Over Biometric Data Lawsuit

Google is shelling out $8.75 million to settle a class-action lawsuit alleging it illegally collected users’ biometric data. The settlement stems from accusations that Google’s Google Workspace for Education (formerly G Suite for Education) collected and stored biometric data from Illinois school users without their knowledge or consent.

Who Gets the Money?

The $8.75 million will be divided among affected individuals. While the lead plaintiff could receive up to $5,000, most others are expected to get between $30 and $100. Eligibility requires being an Illinois resident between March 26, 2015, and May 15, 2025, with a voice or face model created or the Voice Match/Face Match feature enabled in their GWFE account while enrolled in an Illinois school. Claims must be submitted by October 16th.

Google’s Response

Google denies any wrongdoing, stating they didn’t collect, capture, or store biometric data without proper notice and consent. They also deny violating any laws or causing any damages. However, they’ve agreed to the settlement.

Next Steps

A final settlement approval hearing is set for October 14th.
