Millions in Gold Paste Seized at Indian Airport

A couple was caught trying to smuggle a whopping $3.34 million worth of gold paste into India. This clever—but ultimately unsuccessful—attempt involved a unique smuggling technique.

A Sticky Situation

Indian airport security officials intercepted 28 kilograms of gold paste from a man and a woman arriving on a flight from Dubai. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) described the concealment method as “ingenious.” Gold smugglers often liquefy gold, mixing it with substances like resin or glue, to bypass metal detectors.

Bulges and Suspicion

Security personnel noticed something amiss. The couple’s unusual gait and noticeable bulges around their midsections raised red flags. A closer inspection revealed the gold paste neatly strapped around their torsos. The woman was carrying 16 kilograms, and the man 12 kilograms.

Record-Breaking Seizure

The couple, residents of Gujarat, were apprehended. Officials believe this is the largest gold seizure ever at Surat airport. The incident highlights the CISF’s proactive surveillance and profiling efforts in combating smuggling.
