A massive data breach affecting nearly half a million people is resulting in a significant settlement. Insurance broker Hub International will pay out $4.65 million to resolve a class-action lawsuit.
What Happened?
Between December 2022 and January 2023, a data breach exposed highly sensitive information belonging to approximately 479,261 individuals. The exposed data included social security numbers, financial details, passport and driver’s license numbers. The lawsuit claimed Hub International’s negligent data security practices caused the breach.
The Settlement
The settlement offers varying payouts depending on individual circumstances:
- Documented Losses: Victims who can prove financial losses due to the breach could receive up to $5,000.
- No Documented Losses: Those without documented losses will receive $150.
- Credit Monitoring: All eligible individuals will also receive two years of credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.
What You Need To Do
The settlement includes all US residents whose information was compromised and notified of the breach. To claim your payment, you must submit your claim by September 8th. A final approval hearing is scheduled for October 6th.
