A massive surge in cyberattacks targeting Android users has been reported. Security firm Kaspersky revealed that over 12 million attempts to steal banking details and personal information were detected in just the first three months of 2025.
A Huge Jump in Attacks
This represents a significant increase from the 8.8 million attacks seen in the final quarter of 2024. The sheer number of attacks is alarming, highlighting the growing threat to Android users.
The Usual Suspects: Malware and More
The most common threat? Trojans – sneaky malware disguised as harmless apps. These malicious programs accounted for nearly 40% of all detected threats. Kaspersky points to several key culprits behind this surge:
- Mamont Banking Trojans: These malicious programs specifically target financial information.
- Scam Apps: Fake apps designed to trick users into revealing sensitive data.
- Counterfeit Smartphones: Some fake versions of popular phones come pre-loaded with the Triada backdoor malware, allowing hackers to remotely control the device.
A Growing Problem
The number of malicious Android app installation packages also increased dramatically, jumping from 141,779 in Q4 2024 to 180,405 in Q1 2025. This underscores the need for caution when downloading and installing apps.
Stay Safe
This massive increase in attacks serves as a stark reminder to Android users to be vigilant about the apps they download and to practice good cybersecurity habits.
