A major security breach at Coinbase, the US-based cryptocurrency exchange, has resulted in the theft of personal information belonging to a top executive at a major venture capital firm.
Sequoia Capital Partner Targeted
According to reports, Roelof Botha, managing partner at the $56.3 billion Sequoia Capital, was among those affected. Hackers reportedly gained access to his phone number, address, and Coinbase account data. Botha, a prominent venture capitalist with a history of early investments in companies like YouTube and Instagram, has not commented on the matter. Neither has Sequoia Capital.
Coinbase Breach Details
Coinbase revealed in a filing with the SEC that hackers bribed customer service representatives to obtain client data and internal company records. The stolen information included names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, and government ID images. The hackers attempted to extort $20 million from Coinbase to prevent the release of the stolen information, but the company refused to pay.
Coinbase’s Response
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has pledged to reimburse affected customers, improve cybersecurity measures, and relocate some overseas customer support operations.
