Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple, suffered a major crypto blow last year. A whopping $661.6 million worth of XRP was stolen from his personal wallets.
The LastPass Connection
The cause? A hack of the popular password manager LastPass, according to on-chain investigator ZachXBT. A US government forfeiture complaint revealed that Larsen’s private keys, stored within LastPass, were compromised in the 2022 LastPass breach. This led to the January 2024 theft of 283 million XRP. Larsen had previously confirmed the hack but hadn’t disclosed the cause until now.
Still a Billionaire
Despite the massive loss, Larsen’s XRP holdings remain substantial. He still controls roughly $7.18 billion worth of XRP. Interestingly, ZachXBT also noted that Larsen moved over $100 million worth of XRP to cryptocurrency exchanges in January 2025, during a period of rising XRP prices. Some of Larsen’s XRP addresses haven’t been active for years, leading to speculation about access issues or transfers to others.
