Zelle Ditches Standalone App

Zelle, the popular payment app, is shutting down its standalone app on March 31st. After that date, the app will no longer let you send or receive money.

What’s Happening?

The company says this is because most people already use Zelle through their bank’s app. Only about 2% of Zelle transactions currently happen on the standalone app. While the app will remain available for download, it will only provide information on avoiding scams and a list of banks that offer Zelle. Your transaction history will also be removed.

Impact on Users

This change will especially affect users whose banks don’t directly support Zelle, such as those with Fidelity cash management accounts. Zelle says they’re contacting users of the standalone app to let them know about the upcoming changes.

Why the Change?

Zelle’s popularity within major US banks has led to this decision. Since most people access Zelle through their bank’s app or website, maintaining a separate app is no longer seen as necessary.

In short: If you use the standalone Zelle app, you’ll need to start using Zelle through your bank’s app or website by the end of March.
