A $105 Trillion Inheritance: Who Gets What, and When?

A massive wealth transfer is underway, with over $100 trillion expected to change hands over the next two decades. This generational shift of wealth will primarily benefit older generations and their heirs.

Trillions in Transfers

According to a new report by Cerulli Associates, a staggering $105 trillion will be inherited by the year 2048. Charities are also in line to receive a significant portion, estimated at $18 trillion during the same period. The bulk of this wealth – $100 trillion or 81% – will come from Baby Boomers and older generations. High-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, representing just 2% of households, will account for over half ($62 trillion) of the total transferred wealth.

The Generational Breakdown

While Millennials will ultimately inherit the largest share ($46 trillion) over the next 25 years, Generation X will see the biggest windfall in the shorter term. They are projected to receive $14 trillion in the next 10 years, compared to Millennials’ $8 trillion.

Spousal Transfers: A Significant Factor

A significant portion of this wealth will first pass to spouses before reaching heirs and charities. The report estimates $54 trillion in “horizontal” transfers (between spouses), with nearly $40 trillion going to widowed women from the Baby Boomer and older generations.
