A US judge sentenced a crypto scammer to five years in prison for a massive scheme that ripped off victims out of $20 million.
The Scam:
Chirag Tomar, an Indian national, created a fake Coinbase website called “CoinbasePro.Com” that looked exactly like the real thing. Hundreds of people fell for the trick and gave up their real Coinbase login info.
Tomar and his crew also pretended to be Coinbase customer service reps and tricked victims into giving them remote access to their accounts. They even called victims to get their two-factor authentication codes.
The Loot:
Once they had control of the accounts, Tomar and his partners stole the victims’ crypto and turned it into cash. They spent the money on fancy cars, watches, and trips to Dubai and Thailand.
The Arrest and Sentence:
US authorities arrested Tomar last December, and he admitted to the crime in May. The judge sentenced him to five years in prison and two years of supervised release.
