Gas Price Fixers Pay Up: $37.5 Million for Southern California Drivers

Big energy companies are about to cough up a hefty sum to settle accusations they cooked up a scheme to jack up gas prices in California.

Who’s Getting Paid?

If you bought gas in Southern California between February 20, 2015, and November 10, 2015, you might be eligible for a piece of the $37.5 million pie. The counties included are:

  • Los Angeles
  • San Diego
  • Orange
  • Riverside
  • San Bernardino
  • Kern
  • Ventura
  • Santa Barbara
  • San Luis Obispo
  • Imperial

What Happened?

The companies, Vitol, SK Energy Americas, and SK Trading International, are accused of working together to artificially inflate gas prices after a refinery explosion in Torrance in 2015. They allegedly manipulated the market to their advantage, leaving California drivers to pay the price.

No Admitting Guilt, But Big Money Paid

While the companies haven’t admitted to any wrongdoing, they’ve agreed to settle lawsuits filed by California’s Attorney General and a class action lawsuit.
